Wow! I don't know about you, but I think we
should send WF (Patrick) to the movies more
often. Because of his insightful feedback I
hereby knight him PSI TECH's official movie
reviewer extraordinaire.

A.I. may only get 1 thumbs up but the review
gets two!!!!!
MM... I don't like to eat popcorn at the movies though... not when everyone else around you is rattling and crunching and scrunching and making noise like nightfall in the rainforest.

I should have noted in the review though, that while the story itself is a hideous monster, the set design and backdrops are simply gorgeous and some of the best detailed I've ever seen, hence the boost to a 3 star rating... it's just wonderful eye candy (just plug your ears when you go--it's better that way).

(Now see, everyone is going to go and get serious about something that was originally a joke... but that's ok... it can be an ongoing joke.)
good show! finally, a funny kids movie - no profanity, no sexual innuendos, no toilet humour - although cat lovers may find that the cats being cast as the 'bad guys" a little bit unfair - but - I don't have cats so ??/ hehehehe. It does have a couple of tear jerking moments, but of course - well I won't tell you the end :)

two thumbs up
I finally saw this movie (I missed it at the theatres and, in my usual fashion, bought the DVT for the not so small screen, 60" HDTV, and my much better popcorn).

I didn't find it so disappointing as I did dark, in a very Machiavellian way. Tim Burton does dark in the almost camp, film noir way, but this one was dark in the "Elephant Man" or "Caligula" way.

The casual violence of the Flesh Fair. The lasses fair attitude of the ?parents?, and the egomaniac of the William Hurt character blend together to create a near sociopathic view of disregard for humanity no matter what its embodiment. The only "humans" in the movie are the aliens, big surprise. Is Spielberg an abductee trying to give us a message?

I find this bald and dark remake of "Millennium Man" to be a "see once" movie, just like "Elephant Man" or "Mask" or "Traffic" and the make it a gift to that relative you don't hate but don't like either. Or better yet, rent it if you must, but be prepared to be disturbed by it.
A lot of people are saying that the movie comes alive after repeated viewings, that somehow there are deeper messages that Spielburg managed to get across from Kubrik's original ideas. Of course, this is coming from the man who oh-so-recently censored his own film. Oops, he made it too 'adult'. We don't want the kids seeing guns in film, only on TV.

Imagine if Citizen Kane had been reworked by the director or some associate of the film, and the originals lost to us today.

But I digress... I recently purchased AI on DVD, because if you stuff your ears with popcorn and try not to lip-read, it's a rather good movie with some wonderful scenes (thanks I'm sure to Kubrik's original storyboards).

On another note, I need to warn everyone. DO NOT SEE "TIME MACHINE". This film is so horribly bad, that I intend to spend the next four years of my life building a device which can move across time, in the sole pursuit of running over whoever wrote the script with a horse and carriage before it was written. Twice.
While I a, of the opinion that bad Sci Fi is better than good non-Sci Fi, I may have to rework my opinion, if "Time Machine" is that bad.

And while the story boarding on AI may have been good, I still find scenes like the Nanny being disolved with acid while she is still trying to be nice disturbing (and this from the guy who finds most of the slash and gash genre funny...)

I guess there was WAY TOO MUCH "A Clockwork Orange" in the movie to suit me. Where is Fahrenheit 451 when you need it?
To those of you who don't know what he did to "E.T." for its twentieth anniversary:
Spielberg removed the classic line "p____ breath" spoken by Elliot in a dinner seen.

He also used CGI to replace the firearms used by police with walkie-talkies. The use of weapons by the police heightened the tension and demonstrated how far they would go to grab E.T. Fortunately, the DVD will contain both the new version and the uncensored original.
