Walnut Creek -- A newborn boy who was found in
a trash bin by two office workers on Saturday was
doing surprisingly well at a hospital yesterday,
delighting police and hospital officials.

Police believe that the infant was left in the garbage
bin 12 to 24 hours after he was born. He was
swaddled in cloth and still had the umbilical cord
attached.

``God blessed him,'' officer Bill Bennett said. ``He's
alive and healthy.''

The workers who found the boy were cleaning a
nearby dental office when they made the discovery
just before 5 p.m. One of the workers told police
she heard crying and immediately started digging
through the trash bin next to an office on Maria
Lane.

Paramedics were dispatched, and the infant was
taken to Kaiser Permanente, where hospital staff
pronounced him in good condition. The identity of
the mother or the location of the birth is unknown at
this time, police said.

Investigators have interviewed people in the area
about the time the baby was found. They are asking
for anyone who saw any activity in the area near
Maria Lane to call police at (925) 943-5844. The
trash bin is just off Newell Avenue and across from
the south side of Broadway Plaza shopping center.

The infant will be turned over to Child Protective
Services as soon as doctors determine that is
appropriate.
